A few days ago, one of my employees was concerned that his department did not look right. He had received a large shipment that morning and was behind in getting his displays right and the rest of his frozen cases straightened out. Normally, he would ask if he could put in a little more time to complete his tasks and we would allow him to stay.
But...not that day.
You see, also on that day was a scheduled birthday party for his twin sons. When I arrived at work, he was already past his leaving time, and I knew what time the party was to take place. I called him into the office and asked him why was he still here? He stated that his department wasn't finished and I replied "So what? You have a party to go to. Get your butt out of here now!"
He left.
I was told by his wife (who also works for me) that he said I had fussed at him (well...I did!). She thanked me for what I did.
Damn.
If I had taken that same stand years ago, I might not be living alone now.
